VCS has a Print Reduction Program in place since 2014, in an effort to be better stewards of the resources with which we have been entrusted.
Specifically, the 5 goals of the Print Reduction Program are to:
- reduce paper usage in an effort to limit use of a non-renewable resource*
- promote the use of digital alternatives to printing
- reduce costs associated with excessive printing
- reduce unnecessary color printing thereby further reducing costs
- work with VCS Marketing on the creation of publications whenever appropriate
VCS asks faculty and staff to remember the following 7 rules for print reduction:
- By default, all print jobs are to be printed in black and white
- Color printing is allowed but only when color is absolutely necessary
- Use your classroom B/W printer for print jobs that total the same or less than the number of students in your class (i.e. 32 students, 32 pages)
- Limit daily classroom print jobs to 1 or 2 (i.e. 1 or 2 runs of 30+/- pages each)
- For any print jobs that exceed approximately 30 pages, the workroom copiers are to be used
- Always print large batches and/or multiple smaller batches (3 or greater batches of 30+) to the copier
- Instead of defaulting to the printer/copier as your preferred output device, look for ways to leverage technology as your output device**
** For example, instead of printing a Word document, and then printing or copying it 150 times in order to hand out paper to students, consider posting it to your classroom Moodle page instead. You may also find another digital distribution method such as iPad, Google Apps, Notability, Dropbox, etc.
*Trees can be considered a renewable resource, however others argue that when trees are used at a rate faster than the ability for trees to grow back, they can also be considered a non-renewable resource
