This article will explain how to install apps on Elementary student iPads. All app install requests should be properly evaluated by faculty and a helpdesk request submitted. IT staff will then license and install the app(s).
1. Faculty - Application Selection and Request
- Age appropriateness and relevance: Some applications appear good at first look, however some require in-app purchases, some will grant unrestricted web access, and others may grant access to content not suitable for children.
- Quality rating: The minimum rating is 3 stars.
- Benefit analysis: Am I going to use the app enough to justify installing it, or do we already use an application that accomplishes this function?
- Peer review: What does my grade level team think of this application?
- Budget: If the app requires payment, make sure it fits in the budget
- Submit a helpdesk request for installation for both free and paid apps once application selection is complete. Include adequate detail so we can find it in the app store.
Note: Make sure your classroom ipads are charged and ready to receive the app(s).
Note: Sometimes the app distribution doesn't automatically install on every ipad. In this case you will need to open the Maas360 Application Catalog on the affected iPad(s) and reinstall the app manually.
2. IT Staff - App Licensing (even free apps need to have licenses!)
- Log into Maas360 (http://portal.fiberlink.com)
- Apps menu --> Catalog
- Find your app in the list
- Under the VPP Codes column, make sure there is adequate licensing for the request.
- If you need more licenses, order from the VPP store (again free apps as well).
- Log in to VPP store (https://volume.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/login?cc=us)\
- Search for the app and select
- Enter the quantity of licenses and ensure you are using the "Managed Distribution" licensing method.
- Purchase.
- Licensing will appear in the app catalog after a short time.
- If the app does not already exist in the Maas360 App Catalog, it must be added.
- Click on the Apps menu, then "Catalog"
- Click "Add"
- Click "IOS"
- Click "iTunes App Store App"
- Search for the app and select it
- Click Add
- Note: Any licensing you have previously added will show up once the apps appears in the catalog.
3. IT Staff - App Installation
- Log into Maas360 (http://portal.fiberlink.com)
- Click on the Apps menu, then "Catalog"
- Find your app in the list
- Under the app name click on "Distribute"
- Under "Group" select the correct ELEM classroom. If all elem ipads need the app select "Elementary Ipads"
- Click "Instant Install"
- Click "Retry app Install on failures" and choose 5 retries
- Click "Distribute" and type in your password.
Note: Only push a maximum of 2 apps at a time per classroom or apps will simply not push or stop installing at a certain point.
Note: Even with this precaution, sometimes the app distribution doesn't automatically install on all ipads. In this case the teacher (or IT staff) will need to open the Maas360 Application Catalog on the affected iPad(s) and install the app manually.
